“You can’t use Patterson!” – Court denies Watchtower’s bond motion

The Watchtower’s proposed use of Patterson to provide security for the damages award in the Conti case has been thrown out by Judge Robert McGuinness in a stunning setback for the Society, who were hoping to get out of paying a costly annual premium on their $17 million bond – or get the bond reduced altogether. Their failure to get the motion passed increases the financial strain on the Society, making it difficult for them to try to prolong the appeals process.

Supreme Court upholds conviction for man who tried to circumcise son at home

The Supreme Court of Canada has abruptly dismissed the appeal of a British Columbia man who tried to circumcise his four-year-old son on his kitchen floor with a carpet-cutting blade.

DJW’s religious background was as a Jehovah’s Witness, although he was “disfellowshipped” by his family and the church. The Crown said his religious education and associations later led him to believe that male circumcision was a covenant with God.
He attempted to circumcise himself in 2005 and could not stop the bleeding. He had to go to an emergency room where a doctor sutured the wound.

Some of the comments that followed this article – especially those by Richard – were precious. Richard, it turns out, runs Therefore God Exists, a pro-creationist website. His response to the above article is, sadly, very stereotypical.

Jehovah’s Witness objects to wife’s blood transfusion

The man said he knew his wife of eight years well and she had filled in three Advanced Care Directives over a number of years stating her beliefs, signing the most recent in August 2012.

But Ms Barrington said the hospital was contending that the wishes expressed by the woman to doctors on Tuesday evening should supersede the wishes expressed in the directive.

Yeah, I wasn’t surprised either. Whoever had cash riding on this just got paid. Read more about it here. It starts to get interesting around the subheading When Did Jesus Appoint “the Faithful and Discreet Slave” Over His Domestics?

Myths about atheism obscure its secular values

What then is atheism, outside of these myths? What is “new atheism”? And why does a secular state protect the rights of everyone equally?

College is siphoning all of my time and much of my will to live as I take four tests every week while trying to hold down a job. So I have not been able to put together much in the way of content here or anywhere else.

Why I Am Not a Jehovah’s Witness

I was genetically designed to be a Jehovah’s Witness. I say that because, unlike so many others, I did not join the religion at the behest of a smiling face knocking at my door one morning but rather because my parents were Jehovah’s Witnesses. And they were both Jehovah’s Witnesses because their parents were Witnesses. There was no other route—no other reality—in my world than that of the Witnesses and the publishing company that dictates their doctrine, the Watchtower Society. I was taught from an early age that the Watchtower’s teachings were the truth, even to the point of calling them “the Truth.”

Jehovah’s Witnesses and the Theory of Evolution – The Genesis Account

Our Knowledge vs. Their Knowledge

They will tell you that all of these others — these outsiders with their “evidence,” these people who claim to “know” things — are evil liars. They will explain to you that these others are part of a conspiracy. It is a huge, vast, global conspiracy of wicked people that encompasses everyone — everyone except, of course, them. And they will invite you to join them in opposing this conspiracy. They will invite you to join them in believing — without basis or evidence — the very worst things you can imagine about millions of people whom you have never met. They will invite you to join them in celebrating yourselves as uniquely righteous and as better than everyone else — the sole remnant of innocence in an irredeemably wicked world.

A Conversation With WhoIsYourCreator.Com

This is a long one, but worth it.

So here’s my story and subsequent conversations with After a return trip along Interstate 5 in Southern Oregon, I noticed a billboard along the side of the freeway with the caption ‘Are they making a monkey out of you’? Having some higher education basics of science in biology, chemistry, and other related fields under my belt, I couldn’t help resist the urge to check out this website. When I did, I checked out the site and was blown away by the misrepresentation of science they were displaying. So I decided to contact them with a non-confrontational email to see how they would respond. Here’s the initial contact last year:

Oompah, A Former Jehovah’s Witness, Has Died

Oompah, also known as Eric Reeder, has committed suicide.

Oompah, also known as Eric Reeder, was a regular contributor to the ex-Jehovah’s Witness community. After losing all contact with his family due to being declared an apostate, he committed suicide. He was 51 years old.

Post from Oompah at JWD just over a year ago about being disfellowshipped.

Comment at JWD about the news of his death:

***g7/09p.29 Is It Wrong to Change Your Religion?***

“No one should be forced to worship in a way that he finds unacceptable or be made to choose between his beliefs and his family.”

Ironically, the religion and publisher of this statement is one of the biggest offenders with their shunning policy of its members who come to the conclusion that their form of worship is unacceptable.

For some, this severe shunning is too much to bear.

For anyone having problems leaving “the truth,” there are plenty of friends out there waiting to hear from you. Please consider reaching out to them. JWD is probably the biggest online forum for ex-Jehovah’s Witnesses out there. There’s also Ex-JW Secularists and JWR.

And in the long run, there’s no shame in talking to a secular therapist or a any kind of therapist, either.

Here’s an article about shunning for those who may have been told that Jehovah’s Witnesses don’t shun former members, or that Witnesses only do it out of personal choice and not in compliance with Watchtower teaching.
