MYTH: Atheists Claim They Don't Believe So They Can Be Evil With Impunity

The "Atheists Are Just A Bunch Of Amoral Hedonists!" Theory Of Atheism

8/3/07

This is probably one of the weirdest myths about atheists of all. It is certainly one of the most offensive (thanks for that). Yet I'm sure there are some who will read this and just throw up their hands, shouting: "Well of course that's it, you atheist pervert! What else could it be?" If you are one of those people, now would be a good time to hang your head shamefully while feeling bad about yourself, because - from where I sit - this theory doesn't make much sense.

Let me try telling this one back to you from an atheist's point of view and we'll see if you get my meaning about that.

1. So atheist's really do believe in God, but they are either lying or in denial about it. Okay.
2. Their reason for kidding themselves? They want an excuse to do naughty things, like downloading terrabytes of cam-whore porn onto their computers or shoving down old ladies for laughs. Darn them.
3. Since atheists really do believe in God, they also know that he is omniscient. That means he knows they believe in him. They also know that they aren't fooling God at all and their fairytale doubts will avail them nothing. (In other words, God still knows about the cam-whore porn and he's mighty upset about it!)
4. So atheists continue to lie or kid themselves about their doubts because... what? They want to commit suicide? They like burning in Hell for all eternity? What is the logic in that??
5. Clearly, atheists are just plain silly.

The only way around this from where I sit would be if atheists believed in an all powerful being who wasn't all knowing. But surely wisdom and infinite knowledge are necessary before any being could called a god, much less the God. Right?

Doesn't this bring us right back to where we started? A being with limitless power but who lacked infinite knowledge doesn't seem so godly to me. If we believe in something which is less than godlike, then it isn't a belief in God. Certainly not the Christian God at any rate.
